Interesting Halloween Trivia

What Does “Halloween” Mean?

The word Halloween is short form or a contraction for “All Hallow’s Even” or “All Hallows Eve” which is the day before All Saints’ Day. It has origins from Celtic tradition of Samhain which marks the end of the harvest season. Many of its traditions were inspired through out the ages from the Medieval European act of “souling” going door to door asking for food or money and Roman/British tradition of women bobbing for apples to find a suitor.

A Popular Nursery Rhyme’s Dark Origins

The nursery rhyme “Ring Around the Rosie” has a dark origin which goes back to the days of the bubonic plague in the 1500’s.

“Rosies” were the red marks from the disease, while the “pocket full of posies” were the flowers the plague doctors used to lessen the smell of decaying corpses all around. “Ashes, ashes” represented the cremated bodies and “falling down” is falling down or dying.

Who Started the Broken Mirror Superstition?

The superstition of breaking a mirror bringing 7 years of bad luck started with the Romans. They believed that mirrors were tools given by the gods to observe the soul. To damage a mirror was an insult to the gods and hence bad luck was reigned upon anyone who would do such a thing. It is also believed that souls regenerate after 7 years so it would take that long to get back to your original state.
